SOME OF DANA'S WORDS

Three Projects Emerging from Donella Meadows’ Life and Work

At the core of Donella Meadow’s work was the belief that people would create a more beautiful, more equitable, more sustainable world, if the systems in which they operated would allow them to choose more beautiful, equitable and sustainable alternatives. Her work -- research, writing and teaching, locally. nationally, and internationally -- flowed out of this belief. Three memorial funds have been established in Dana's honor to carry on and expand upon the work to which she dedicated her life.

Donella Meadows Fund, Sustainability Institute

The creation of Sustainability Institute, a "Think-Do-Tank" dedicated to sustainable resource use, sustainable communities, and sustainable economics, was the culmination of Dana’s life’s work. Sustainability Institute shares a site with the Cobb Hill eco-community on an organic farm in Hartland Four Corners, Vermont. The institute works at the level of whole systems to understand the underlying causes of social, economic, and ecological problems and to identify and communicate about high-leverage solutions to these problems.

A gift to the Donella Meadows Fund will help make Donella's visions continue to root and grow. The institute is remodeling an old farmhouse into a "green" office center, completing three of Donella's books for publication, supporting experimental energy and agriculture projects, and developing new initiatives for research, education, and policy change.

Tax-deductible checks should be made payable to:

Fund for a Global Scholar's House, Balaton Group

The Balaton Group was co-founded in 1982 by Donella Meadows as an international network of scientists and educators from 30 nations striving to design and implement policies for sustainable use of the globe’s natural resources. For two decades it was Dana’s principal means of mentoring young scholars and promoting the ideas of sustainable development.

The Balaton Group has created a fund to promote collaboration between its members and the Sustainability Institute at Cobb Hill. The fund will be used to purchase and remodel a house within 5-10 minutes walk of the Institute. The facility will be offered for free, along with a car and living allowance, to scientists around the world who wish to carry out work complementary to the Institute’s programs. There is great demand for this visitors’ house, which will materially enrich the Institute’s programs while giving visiting scholars an opportunity to learn from the unique social, agricultural, and engineering designs of the Cobb Hill community.

Tax-deductible checks should be made payable to:

Donella Meadows Memorial Fund, Dartmouth College

Donella Meadows taught at Dartmouth College from 1972 through 2001 — in the interdisciplinary Environmental Studies Program and in the graduate program of the Resource Policy Center. Donella's teaching and mentoring in the Environmental Studies Program have inspired countless students to critically examine their relationship with the natural world.

A fund in her honor will directly help students face this challenge. The memorial fund will support student farmers allowing them to work and learn about sustainable agriculture and sustainable living systems. Plans for improving the learning facilities at the farm site are in progress and this fund will contribute to making the Environmental Studies Program and the Dartmouth Organic Farm a center for sustainability education for the entire Dartmouth Community.
Tax-deductible checks should be made payable to Dartmouth College and sent to:
